Part 2 (4 CPD)

This session will examine accessible design standards for sites outside of public rights-of-way. The scoping requirements for accessible routes will be reviewed, as well as the building blocks for accessible design of routes. The design standards for various components of accessible routes will be covered, including ramps, curb ramps, stairways and handrails. Site arrival point scoping and design standards will be covered as well (parking, passenger loading zones and bus stops).

Part 1 (4 CPD)

In 2023, the US Access Board promulgated new accessibility guidelines for pedestrian facilities in the public right-of-way. While these guidelines have been in the works for over 20 years, the published rule includes several new requirements. This session will discuss those guidelines and which entities may be subject to the Americans with Disabilities Act. This session will cover major parts of the new guidelines, including on-street parking, curb ramps, transit stops/shelters, and scoping requirements. Differences between these guidelines and the ADA Standards for sites will be reviewed.
